After an arts B.A., Kate worked for an NGO working with refugees and asylum seekers in the UK. She then studied for an MSc in Development and Emergency Practice, after which, she went to Afghanistan. She has worked for both international and national NGOs, including faith-based organizations.

She has a particular interest in those on the margins of power. Whilst having children she took up studying for an M.A. in Theology with a focus on Biblical studies. Having a child with complex disabilities, she focused her personal theological research on Disability Theology. She also teaches M.A. modules in Humanitarian Practice and Social Justice. Her Ph.D. research in Biblical studies focuses on the 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 motif of the Body of Christ using disabled and queer hermeneutics.
