Welcome to the MWRC

The Manchester Wesley Research Centre promotes and supports research on the life and work of John and Charles Wesley, their contemporaries in the 18th century Evangelical Revival, their historical and theological antecedents, their successors in the Wesleyan tradition, and contemporary scholarship in the Wesleyan and Evangelical tradition. This includes areas such as theology, history, biblical studies, education, ethics, literature, mission, philosophy, pastoral studies, practical theology, and social theology.

The MWRC is located on the campus of Nazarene Theological College in the Manchester suburb of Didsbury and is affiliated with the Methodist Archives, housed in The University of Manchester John Rylands Library. These research centres provide magnificent resources for students and researchers in this field.

Research students registered for doctoral research through Nazarene Theological College may be eligible for an award of up to 50% of tuition fees.  Research Fellows shall be eligible for election after the successful completion of the probationary period or one year of full-time (two years part-time) registration, whichever comes first.
  • Visiting Research Fellows are established scholars who apply to conduct research through the Centre or to avail themselves of the benefits of the Centre. [Past and Present Visiting MWRC Fellows]

How do I become a Junior Research Fellow?

Interested students are encouraged to apply through any partner institution or to contact the director or administrator of the MWRC.  See what current and former Junior Research Fellows have to say about their experience at the MWRC.

How do I become a Visiting Research Fellow?

Each year the Centre considers applications from researchers who wish to be considered as Visiting Research Fellows, and accepts a limited number of candidates.

The Visiting Scholar Programme is designed to offer an opportunity for scholars who have a professional interest in the purposes of the Centre to spend a period of time in Manchester using the various resources of the Centre on the campus of Nazarene Theological College. The duration of the residency period would normally be one month, though it may extend to an academic term (three months). A Visiting Scholar will be able to take advantage of all or some of the following opportunities:

  • Access to the MWRC and, where desirable, ongoing supervision during the period of residency from an appropriate member of the MWRC support staff.
  • Access to Nazarene Theological College and MWRC library resources; access to The University of Manchester and John Rylands Library resources (including the Methodist Archives) by arrangement.
  • Receive an orientation tour of the JRL Methodist Archives during the first week of the visit, including focused advice on use and availability of resources.
  • Present a paper to the MWRC/NTC Research Seminar, which includes faculty, research students, and invited guests.
  • Submit an article for publication in the Wesley and Methodist Studiesseries published by the Didsbury Press of Manchester, or submit an article (where appropriate) for publication in the Bulletin of the John Rylands University Library of Manchester on work completed in the Rylands archives.
  • Where appropriate, participate (normally as an ‘audit student’) in taught postgraduate seminars.
  • Introductions, where applicable, to other noted research scholars (and, where possible, the chance to visit and interact with such scholars).

Visiting scholars will be responsible for making their own travel plans, and for confirming housing availability. Only limited housing is available at Nazarene Theological College. If NTC accommodation is unavailable, the MWRC recommends that accommodation arrangements be made through Luther King House (www.lkh.co.uk) (convenient to public transportation, the MWRC and the JRL). Contact Mrs D Green (dgreen@nazarene.ac.uk) about NTC accommodation.

Given the intensive nature of research, the MWRC suggests that scholars schedule this time apart from family and spousal commitments to make maximum use of this research opportunity.

The appointment of a Visiting Scholar will be approved by the MWRC Board.

Applications should normally be submitted by March 1st for summer residency or by September 1st for winter residency.

Funding for visiting scholars will be the responsibility of the scholar and his/her home institution.

Prospective visiting scholars are encouraged to explore the resources available at the MWRC and NTC libraries via NTC’s online catalogue and the online catalogue of theses and dissertationsheld at the MWRC. Additionally, the resources of the John Rylands University Library including the Methodist Archives can be searched at: http://www.library.manchester.ac.uk/.

For enquires about the Visiting Scholar Programme contact the MWRC Administrator, Geordan Hammond (ghammond@nazarene.ac.uk).
